Nerdy Gift Ideas Part 3: The ever awaited stocking stuffers

Those reading my nerdy gifts posts #1 and #2 might have noticed there was supposed to be a #3… OK, so this post is a bit past the holiday shopping time, but to my credit, I got busy with the whole holidays thing. So anyhow, here, though a bit belated, are some good nerdy stocking stuffers:

What scientist doesn’t want a voo-doo Albert Einstein keychain for extra smart luck? That, and he’s just so CUTE!

Click on the title or this link to see the rest of the nerdy stocking stuffers!

Who doesn’t want a pen that also functions as a USB drive and a Laser pointer? Of course, they’re perfect for your favorite scientist traveling to yearly conferences…

Disease and family fun – it’s the best of both worlds! Check out INFECTION: THE BOARD GAME!

“The first one to be completely disease free (or the last player living) wins the game”

I couldn’t make that up.

Of course, every biologist loves to bring their work with them to show the world. And what travels better than a pocket microscope?? Then they can show you all the fun stuff that lives in your water or on your skin…
if you really want to know.

“Soap so smart, it doesn’t have to smell pretty.” Now that’s a nerdy idea!

This one is a must if you have a neurologist on your list. A Brain Jello Mold – the ultimate nerdy party accessory. You can even make a brain jello shot – C’mon! You know that would be cool.

For those scientists who can’t have a white christmas, get them some Instant Snow. It makes the holidays happen in any weather!

Because only a scientist neighbor would want to borrow a volume-of-honey-made-by-a-bee-hive-in-a-day’s worth of sugar

Every year is a year for science, so commemorate your year with your beloved nerd with a yearly molecule ornament. This year is Menthol!

Let your favorite nerd show off their evolutionary prowess with the Evolving Darwin Play Set. It’s like army men for biologists!

OK, that’s it. If you have any other great gift ideas be sure to post them in the comments!

Nerdy Gift Ideas Part 2: Nerdette Gifts

Got a lovely nerdette in your life and desperately trying to sweep her off her feet this holiday season? I’ve got a few ideas that might bail you out…

If you can’t think of a better way to show her how you light up when you see her? How about a T-Shirt! Well, this one, anyway. These shirts show a set of hearts that, when separated, are only half-lit. But magically, or, you know, scientifically, when the two are brought together the hearts on the shirt – like your own – light up!

Of course, nerdettes are still women, and there’s a gift all women love: Jewelry. But if you’re going to buy jewelry for a nerdette, why not get her something fine and following her passion? For example, you could get your favorite elasmobranch biologist a fossilized great white tooth pendant.Or, for your favorite botanist, you could surprise her with algae bloom inspired jewelry like the necklace on the right.

Still not your belle’s style? Gold Periodic RingPerhaps a simpler token of your affection is more up her alley, like the pendant to the left from Etsy seller NBDesigns. Of course, you could show your favorite chemist how much you appreciate her with a stylish periodic ring, instead.

But if you want to let her know exactly how you feel, consider one of these molecular pieces from MolecularMuse. Your feelings red-hot? How about the capsaicin necklace (right). Does she make you truly happy, just like seratonin (upper left)? Or perhaps you just want to express the love you feel with the chemical responsible for it in your brain, dopamine (lower left). You could also give her caffeine, chocolate, red wine, PEACE (in amino acids), or even acetylcholine, the stuff of dreams.

But, if you don’t want to get jewelry, you could always buy her perfume. DNA by Bijan is right up any nerdette’s alley! Ok, so maybe I only like it for the great name and cool bottle, but at least it seems nerd-worthy.

Otherwise, you could get your nerdette a stylish purse from Stitch Pixie. They have a perfect collection for your favorite developmental biologist featuring images of fertilization (right). There’s also floral and faunal collections – so there’s something for every nerdette!

I hope these help you hopeless romantics in love with a nerdy girl! After all, who wouldn’t love a nerdette – labcoats are totally sexy!

Last but not least, soon to come: Nerd Stocking Stuffers!

Nerd Gift Ideas Part 1: For Any Nerd

As the holidays draw ever nearer, I’ve been trying desperately to put together a Christmas list for my family and friends. After a lot of internet-searching and idea-hunting, I’ve stumbled upon some great nerdy gifts, and I figured I might as well share them with you all. After all, if you read this blog you’re either a science-nerd or a nerd-lover, so these gift ideas just might come in handy. Here’s part one of nerdy gift ideas for the holidays, with gifts for any nerd you love

Beaker MugA simple gift for any science nerd is a piece of the lab they can use anywhere, like this classic Beaker Mug. It’s an easy way for your favorite nerd to show off to coworkers or family that they’re a little nerdy, and proud of it!

Who doesn’t want a loveable toy to cuddle with on the cold winter nights? Well, now there’s one for the scientist in us all! Meet the giant plush microbes!Microbes With a variety of grat organisms to choose from, you’re sure to find one for that special scientist in your life. Have a virologist on your list? How about a little HIV! Developmental Biologist? Get them a matching sperm and egg! Neurologist? A brain cell! If you have lots of microbe-loving friends, try getting the little microbes with dishes. There’s 3 per dish, so you can pass out your favorite microscopic organism to everyone!

Of course, the easiest gift to give is a perfectly nerdlicious T-Shirt. Here are some of my favorites:

Oh No! Pluto’s
Reaction
Hung Like
A Barnacle
Lab Partners Sex is Fun Nerdy

I’ve always wanted a shirt that says “I am statistically significant (p<0.05), if anyone wants to make one…

Hungry Scientist HandbookOf course, books are always great gifts for nerds, though its often tough to know what your nerdy loved one has already read. A fun one that few will have found is The Hungry Scientist Handbook: Electric Birthday Cakes, Edible Origami, and Other DIY Projects for Techies, Tinkerers, and Foodies. It’s chock full of worthy projects for any science geek. The first experiment is making edible undies, so it’s even perfect for your nerdy-lover.
